The Narnia Tag

Jen did this tag over on her blog and tagged everyone reading it, and since I have loved Narnia ever since I was a very little child, I decided to do it as well! There’s not much introduction necessary, it’s a tag about Narnia which was created by S.J. Barnard over at her blog. Thanks for creating this tag, S.J.! Now, let’s get into the rules!

Rate of Narnia Fanatics:

01. Nostalgic Fanatic—You read the book and/or watched the movies as a child and the word Narnia gives you a warm feeling

02. Serious Fanatic—You rediscovered the wonder of Narnia after you were older and have read the books and watched the movies

03. Maniacal Fanatic—You have lived Narnia from childhood, hid in closets on more accounts than is healthy, have read and watched all the movies including the BBC version.

Based on this little scale here, I would be a Maniacal Fanatic. While Chronicles of Narnia has never been my absolute favourite book series, I still adored it as a child and love it now. And I’m old enough that I have watched the BBC versions, before the Disney versions even existed. Cringeworthy as they are, BBC Narnia films were my childhood.

All right, let’s get into the questions now!

1. Who is your favourite Pevensie sibling?

Definitely Peter. I’ve always related to him, being the eldest of five and all. However, I have a shameful secret and that is…that I’ve always liked the other kids better than the Pevensies.

2. What is the most underrated book in Narnia?

I would personally say either The Last Battle or Prince Caspian. Prince Caspian is definitely better known as a movie, and while I like the movie, I think it treated both Peter and Caspian abysmally. In my mind, it took away the ending of Peter’s character arc (which in the books is going from a scared young boy in a warzone to being a noble and courageous leader, and then learning how to pass on his wisdom and faith to a younger man, that being Caspian), and it took away Caspian’s arc, (which was learning from someone older and wiser than himself and stepping into the role of a king that he never felt worthy of) and made them both into bickering, jealous adolescents, which is, I remind you, the role Caspian and Edmund are supposed to fill.

Also, they made Caspian into an absolute coward and I’m mad about it. It’s still a good movie though. Please don’t attack me.

3. Who is your favourite Narnian king?

Well, the one I always had a crush on as a kid was Tirian, the last king of Narnia. I’m not sure why him and never Caspian or Rilian or Peter, but Tirian is really quite a tragic hero. He’s a king who murders someone, feels extreme guilt and no longer believes he is worthy of his crown. He abandons his people, only to return when he realises that they are being deceived and led like lambs to the slaughter, and he leads them into their final fight against the demonic powers of darkness. Glorious.

4. Who is your favourite Narnian queen?

Uh… probably Caspian’s wife. The part where she dies in The Silver Chair and Caspian almost kills Drinian always makes me so sad.

5. Which non-human Narnian do you like best?

Puddleglum, one hundred percent. But I also have always been fascinated by The Lady of the Green Kirtle. She’s a witch, but is she a human? A giantess? The White Witch reincarnated, which I think is hinted at in the movies? Something else entirely? There’s so many unanswered questions about her.

6. Which book deserves a movie?

All of them. In fact, my dream is to have the series redone and filmed the way the Harry Potter movies were done, with one releasing every year and the child actors growing up with their characters.

However, if I must choose one that has never been made into a movie, I would choose The Last Battle. I really want to see what sort of monstrous CGI horror they could create for Tash.

7. What is one thing you did as a Narnia fanatic you do not regret?

As a child, The Silver Chair was my favourite Narnia story and I used to be the Witch, while my brother got to be Prince Rilian. As you can imagine, I used to tie my brother to a chair. Do I regret it? I probably should, but we had a lot of fun, and no one got hurt.
